A yearly wellness exam will help to detect problems early and aid in disease management of your pet. Middle aged pets are subject to many different illnesses and Banks Animal Hospital recommends annual blood, stool and urine testing to detect problems that may not be apparent on a physical examination.
Normal results provide us with a baseline to compare to values taken at a future date when a problem may exist. This can sometimes give us some insight on when a problem may have started and help to determine the prognosis and type of treatment needed. Pets are masters at hiding illness and disease and can at times be sick and show no outward signs.
As an example, a pet with kidney disease can lose up to 75% of kidney function before showing outward signs of illness. Wellness testing allows us to see a potential illness that may have started and help to determine the prognosis and type of treatment needed.
During a wellness exam Dr. Pusong will give your pet a nose to tail check up; pet’s weight, muscle tone, joint range of motion, coat condition, skin, nails, abdomen, heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, and mouth condition.
